Main / The E6 System

Obormot's Reign of Winter uses a variant rule system called E6.1 It works like this:

You get to level 6, then you stop gaining levels.

Your character's abilities do not stop changing or advancing. They just stop advancing "up" — that is, your character stops gaining hit dice, hit points, base attack and save bonuses, caster level, and so forth.

When you reach 6th level, you keep gaining experience points (XP). You can spend that XP to gain various abilities: feats, skill points, certain higher-level abilities of your class, certain low-level abilities of other classes, and a few other things. In short: your options (in and out of combat) keep expanding as you keep "leveling up'' past 6th, and your overall combat power keeps increasing (slowly) as you gain various combat-related abilities, but automatic, "vertical" advancement stops at level 6.

Epic Advancement

Once you've reached 6th level (which means that you've spent a total of 15,000 XP; see Character Advancement for details), you can spend any further XP you gain on any of the advancement options listed here. You can spend XP, and gain your new abilities, whenever your character has the chance to get a good night's rest. (Some advancement options have special requirements for gaining them, which are listed in their description.) Unless stated otherwise, each epic ability may be taken only once.

Every time an epic character gains any epic ability that costs at least 5,000 XP, he or she also gains 2 skill points.

Feats

You can spend 5,000 XP to gain any feat for which you qualify. The Feats Index lists the feats available in Obormot's Reign of Winter.

Skill Points

You can spend 1,000 XP to gain 2 skill points. You can use skill points gained as an epic character to improve your ranks in any skill — but remember that you can't have more ranks in a skill than your character level (which is 6).

Class Abilities

You can spend experience points to gain more, and more powerful (that is, higher-level), abilities from your primary class (that's the class in which you've reached 6th level). The description page for each of the character classes available in Obormot's Reign of Winter lists and describes the epic advancement options available for characters of that class. See the Classes page for the list of classes.

Other Classes' Abilities (Multiclassing)

You can spend experience points to gain the low-level class abilities of classes other than your primary class, by selecting the following epic abilities. You can select each of them any number of times, gaining the class abilities of a different class each time. Gaining these abilities does not increase your hit dice, hit points, base attack or save bonuses, the maximum number of skill ranks you have, or your caster level for your primary class (if any). These abilities also do not grant you any skill points (beyond the normal 2 skill points granted for taking any epic advancement option worth 5,000 XP or more). You only gain the class abilities of that class (including spellcasting, if any).

Channel Energy: The channel energy abilities of different classes do not stack with each other; they are separate abilities.

Spellcasting: The caster levels of different classes never stack, nor can spell slots of one class be used to cast spells of another class; the spellcasting progressions of different classes are entirely separate.

Ability Advancement

Increase one of your ability scores.
Prerequisite: Character level 6th.
XP Cost: 5,000.
Benefit: One of your ability scores (your choice) increases by 1. (This can't increase any ability score past your racial maximum; see the Races page for more information.)
Special: This advancement option may be taken multiple times, but no more than twice for each ability score.

Combat Mastery

Your combat prowess improves.
Prerequisite: 6th level in any of the following classes: barbarian, fighter, monk, paladin, ranger, rogue, inquisitor.
XP Cost: 5,000.
Benefit: Your base attack bonus increases by +1.

Extra Spell Casting

Gain additional spell slots.
Prerequisite: 6th level in any of the following classes: bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, wizard, oracle, summoner, or witch.
XP Cost: 5,000.
Benefit: You gain 3 levels of spell slots for your primary class. You choose the spell slot levels you gain when you select this ability, which can be any combination of 1st and 2nd level spell slots that add up to 3 levels.
Special: This advancement option may be taken multiple times. Each time after the first time you take it, its XP cost increases by 2,500 XP (i.e. the second time you take it, it costs 7,500 XP, then 10,000 XP, and so forth).

Skill Focus

Prerequisite: Character level 6th, 6 ranks in the chosen skill.
XP Cost: 5,000.
Benefit: Select one skill in which you have 6 ranks (the normal maximum). The maximum number of ranks you can have in this skill increases by 2. (This ability does not actually grant you higher rank in the chosen skill; you must still spend skill points to increase your rank, as normal.)
Special: This advancement option may be taken multiple times, but no more than twice for any given skill. The second time you take it for the same skill, it costs 10,000 XP.

Spell Casting Mastery

Your spellcasting ability improves.
Prerequisite: 6th level in any of the following classes: bard, cleric, druid, sorcerer, wizard, oracle, summoner, or witch.
XP Cost: 10,000.
Benefit: Your caster level for spells of your primary class increases by 1.

1 Short for "Epic 6th [level]". E6 is a modification that can be applied to any 3rd-edition-like version of Dungeons & Dragons (such as 3.0, 3.5, Pathfinder or, in this case, the Worlds of Adventure ruleset). Obormot's Reign of Winter uses a customized version of E6, adapted for this campaign. (back to top)
